Goals for fitness and life

I thought it would be worth discussing in more detail, goal setting, how, why etc. Setting goals can help motivate you, inspire you and gives you a focus. Once achieved the feeling of accomplishment can be truly uplifting and a great high. Goals don't have to be related to weight loss or fitness either, they can relate to all areas of your life. As a Personal Trainer I spent time with my clients plotting a route to achieve there goals and reward achievemnt nalong the way.

To set goals, there is a simple formula to follow, which I have outlined below:
1 Know thyself

To achieve goals you must be passionate about them. You will be passionate about goals if they have meaning for you. Consider the following before you begin:
  • What are your core values?
  • Where do you want to be in 10 years?
  • What do you want for your life?
  • What difference do you want to make in the world?

2 Balanced Goals for a balanced life

Set your goals in all areas of your life:

  • Career
  • Health
  • Personal

3 Set SMART goals in present tense

  • Specific - be clear and specific about your goal.
  • Measurable - if you can't measure it is dificult to achieve, and how do you know you have achieved it.
  • Attainable - make sure you are able to attain the goal.
  • Realistic - is the goal feasible given your effort level and tendencies?
  • Timely - write a specific date so when it comes, you can check off completion of the goal.

A good way of setting a goal, (fitness related) I have found and use with some of my clients, is to enter a race or event of some kind, this ticks a number of the SMART criteria, and gives you a very real focus. I have done this myself a number of times and it works, so go on, give it a go. If you want to know more or need help with your specific requirements contact me via the website http://www.fittoyou.co.uk/, and good luck.
