What a difference 't makes

I was with a client yesterday, we were doing a tough kettlebell session, using heavier bells than we have to date. Before each exercise she said "I can't do that with the heavy one" or "don't expect me to do that with the big one". I did what I usually do with clients who feel and think they can't do something and that is confirm they can, I wouldn't ask them to do something if I wasn't sure they could achieve something, and then I got her to try it.......amazingly she managed all the reps of all the exercises I asked her to do.
This not only surprised her, but gave her great confidence for next time, now she is wanting more which is good for her self belief as well as her training and goal achieving.
We were then discussing what she had been eating over the last two days, since I had last seen her, she told me she had a box of Maltesers because they were 2 for a pound and she can't say No to them. Now I don't have a problem with the occasional treat, but a) we all know how morish maltesers are....you simply can't have just 1 or 2 and b) on top of what she had been eating anyway this was not a good move.
So we talked and joked about the can't word and if she switched can and can't in the right places she would achieve all her goals. So we have come up with a plan, whenever she thinks she can't do something (like a particular exercise or resist the sweets etc) she swithches to can, and don't to do.
It shifts the thought process to positive, rather than negative, so next time you are about to think can't or don't stop and tell yourself can and do.
Good Luck and you can log onto http://www.fittoyou.co.uk for further info and contact details.
